Top Tips from Top Producers:

What the Most Successful People Do Differently

Sales
Dealing with ego-driven buyers
The key to dealing with ego-driven buyers is to get them talking about their problem. Ask them to list possible solutions to their problems and then see what you can agree on. Remember, what comes out of their mouths means more to them than what comes out of your mouth. It’s almost impossible to listen yourself out of a sale!

Motivation
Action creates opportunity
The idea that you have to develop bravery in order to act is ludicrous. In reality, the most successful people don’t hesitate to act while afraid. They know that sometimes you have to act your way into thinking. Once you’ve taken action, you begin to think more clearly about what’s important. Taking action a few times leads you to develop courage and confidence.

Thinking and planning—although important—mean nothing if you never take action. Remember that action creates opportunity; indecision creates nothing.

Management
Improving performance
To improve employees’ performance, identify and maximize their strengths first. By praising employees for their strongest skills and abilities, you give them the confidence and motivation needed to use those strengths to overcome weaknesses.

For example, if an employee builds great relationships with co-workers but has problems with basic skills, guide the employee toward finding a co-worker willing to help him or her to improve those basic skills.

People whose talents are acknowledged become much more motivated to identify their weaknesses and to do their best to improve. If you continually focus on weaknesses, your people will always feel weak.

Customer Service
Top complaint from call-in customers
Don’t make callers repeat themselves. Someone who has explained a problem three times to three different people hangs up angry, whether or not the problem is solved. Recent studies reveal that people want to deal with just one service representative. Customer service systems that focus on providing that always receive the highest ratings.

Communication
Public presentation skills: PowerPoint problems
The simple key to an effective PowerPoint presentation is to make sure that you say exactly what appears on-screen. If you say something other than what the audience is viewing, learning does not take place. We recommend you decide precisely how you will say something and then create the slide to match your speaking style. This can prevent the syndrome known as “death by PowerPoint.”

Visual Design
Clarity is king
Web sites and brochures tend to look busy in order to show they mean business. Unfortunately, the cluttered design means clarity is lost—to the point that people might think the look is cool but they don’t really grasp what’s being communicated. They won’t call you and say, “Hey, I don’t get it.” Instead, they’ll do business with someone whose message is clear!

Special effects are easy. Simple elegance takes talent.
